Thinking Caps

A Tangible Outcome

Personalized thinking hats for friends

Project Type

Personal

Tools

Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator

Duration

1 Month

High-Level Goals:

  • Personalization & Unification

  • Make something meaningful & tangible

A few years ago, I received a dad-cap as a gift from my close friend (the khaki one above). I loved everything about it, so I decided that I wanted to make my own versions and gift them to family and friends for Christmas. The purpose of these hats, aside from being gifts, was to promote mindfulness, self-awareness and communication styles with others.

Personalize

I thought that these color-personalities would be a good approach to making each hat unique, so I decided to represent that concept with a stitched line on the back of the hat (in the color that I thought most closely fit the giftee).

Unify

Another goal was to find a way to connect/unite each hat as part of a “collection.”

A little back story:
My first design job was an internship at a local branding firm in Northern Virginia. I reported directly to the firm’s founder and chief creative, Tate Linden, who has been an influential mentor to me ever since. Tate was invited to do a TEDxTalk in Herndon, VA (I know, my inspiration is TEDTalk heavy). He adapted Gandhi’s model for happiness into his own model for unhappiness.

The visual aid for his model was a triple venn diagram, so I decided to reduce the graphic down to create the unifying mark for all the caps.

This project a was mix of expressing myself, giving, and following through to create something tangible. It was a good feeling to work hard, create and then give the final product to people who are important to me.
